The following is my list of some of the interesting places to go---people to see---and things to do when you visit us. All of these locations are within an hour or less of the house. You could do one--or I will help you work up a day trip to include more than one. Some of these locations have their own website. I have tried to make a link to each of these. I hope you enjoy checking out this list and I hope that you will come to visit us and visit some of these great places.
Near the charming towns of Statesville, North Wilkesboro, Elkin, Mocksville & Yadkinville

Turn through the stone gate and check into Madelyn's in the Grove.
2. Take a day and enjoy the self-guided wine tour to all of the wineries in the area. 3. Hop in the car and take a ride up to the Cook Shack. The grilled chicken sandwich is the best! Pal & Myles will tell you all about Union Grove and our musical traditions. 4. Laurel Gray Vineyards is located at 5726 Old Highway 421--336-468-8463. 5. Play golf at one of the many local golf clubs. 6. Visit Linney's Mill and purchase the best stone ground grits and cornmeal you will find. It's a great place for a picnic. 7. On Saturdays & Sundays, The Old Jennings's Store is open from 8-4. They have beautiful handcrafted furniture and antiques. 8. If you like Antiques, Statesville is the place to visit. There are several malls downtown. 9. The Iredell Museum of Arts and Heritage is a wonderful place to see fine art, local talent, an early American homestead and an Egyptian mummy. 10. The NASCAR Museum and other Racing Shops are in Mooresville and Statesville. 11. Visit the Dale Earnhardt Racing Shop on Highway 3 in Mooresville. 12. Come back and have an afternoon snack and a nap at Madelyn's in the Grove. 13. Union Grove sits in the middle of High Point, Hickory and Hwy. 321. These are the best places to shop for furniture. 14. Come and visit and take a "Ladies Getaway Package"--Breakfast in bed, hot chocolate, good movies and more. . . . . 15. The Blue Ridge Parkway is about 40 minutes from the house. There are several places to get on and off and still be less than an hour from Madelyn's in the Grove. 16. Take a ride to Farm House Gardeners on Highway 70 in Statesville. You will find unusual plants, home decorating & garden treasures. 17. Enjoy a barbeque sandwich at C.D.'s Smoke House in Harmony. Bring it back and eat in the gazebo. 18. On Mondays, visit the All Day Flea Market on Hwy 115 in Wilkesboro. It's an Experience. 19. Visit the Iredell County Library. They have an extensive genealogical resource area. 20. Interested in more antiques? In the quaint town of Harmony, there is delightful antique and herb shop called Butler Mill Antiques. 21. If you are visiting North Wilkesboro, drop in at Ivy Ridge Traditions. It is a wonderful gift shop filled with items you just don't see everywhere. It's on Main Street. 22. Statesville has a new multi-plex theater. It is located on 1515 Cinema Drive Statesville, NC 28625 and the telephone number is 704-871-8664 . 23. Fort Dobbs in Statesville is a North Carolina Historical site opened M on-Fri. on Fort Dobbs Road at exit 54 on I-77 or exit 50 on I-40. 24. The Windy Gap Winery is about 15 minutes from the house. Ride over and pick up a bottle of wine to have with your afternoon snack. Always have a designated driver. 25. Lake Norman State Park is a great place for public swimming, hiking trails and picnic shelters. 26. JR's & Rack Room Shoe Outlet is located on Broad St. at exit 50 of I-77 in Statesville. 27. You can go "creekin" and "slucin" at the Hiddenite Gem Mines. We have found garnets, amethysts, sapphires and emeralds. 28. The Russell Stover Candy Outlets is in the Wal-Mart Shopping Center. At exit 151 on I-40 (one exit west of I-40 and I-77 interchange). 29. Stone Mountain State Park in Wilkes County includes hiking trails, mountain vies, the best rock climbing on the eastern sea-board and picnic areas. 30. The Third Creek Cemetery was used from 1756-1898. A good place for genealogical research. This is located at the corner of West End Street and Tradd Streets in Statesville. 31. The second oldest synagogue in the state is located beside the Fourth Creek Cemetery. 32. If you would like to go to a movie, there is a small multi-plex in Elkin. Take I-77 N. to exit 82 (Hwy 268). Turn left at the exit stoplight and go about 2 miles. The theater is on the right. 33. Stony Knoll Vineyard is one of the newest vineyards/tasting rooms to open. The telephone number is (336) 374-5752. They are open on Saturday and Sundays. 34. Howard's Strawberries and Pumpkin Farm is 2 miles from the B&B. 35. Cafe Sayess is a wonderful restaurant in downtown Statesville. The menu is in our little information book in you room. 36. Shop at Carolina Mountain Sports in downtown Statesville to get all of your fly-fishing and hiking supplies. 37. Shop for hard to find country collectibles at Flo's Attic in downtown Elkin. 38. The award winning play "Tom Dooley-A Wilkes County Legend" is produced each summer at Benton Hall in North Wilkesboro. 39. The Thomas Kinkade Gallery and The John Furches Gallery are located on Main Street in Elkin. 40. Clockworld sells a large variety of new & antique clocks in Statesville. 41. The Classic Crafter is a exit 50 on I-77 in the JR's shopping Center. They sell arts and craft items from over 150 crafters. 42. The Brushy Mountain Orchards offer apples, nectarines and peaches at the appropriate times during the growing season. 43. Union Grove has a great parade during the annual Spring Festival held in April. Crafts, food, entertainment and old cars on display are just some of the things that you can do. 44. For a fun afternoon or evening take a riverboat ride on the Catawba Queen. Please call for reservations for sightseeing cruises, luncheon and dinner cruises. 704-664-2628. 45. Enjoy another Ben Long fresco at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro. 46. Mount Airy is about 40 minutes from the house. It is the home of Andy Griffith. 47. The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival is held in Elkin during May. 48. The Day Lily Farm, just a few minutes from the B&B, has acres of daylilies for sale. Advance notice is needed for tours. 49. Wilkes Community College Gardens are designed to appeal to the senses of smell and touch. The garden interprets the variety of flowers and Braille labels. 50. Purchase bulk spices, hoop cheese and other Amish products at the Community Store at Windsor's Crossroads. (Closed Sunday-Monday). 51. The Old Wilkes Walking Tour has 13 stops on the National Historic Register. 52. Interested in old churches? Visit Snow Creek UMC (Snow Creek Road) and Moss Chapel (Jennings Road). Both are within 10 miles of the Bed and Breakfast. 53. Stop by Royall's Drug Store in downtown Elkin for a great lunch with a 1950's ambiance. 54. "Images of the Crossroads" a fresco painted by Ben Long a world renowned artist and Statesville native, is located in the Convention Center in downtown Statesville at the corner of Center & Front Streets. 55. Visit Everham Motorsports--The home of Bill Elliott and Jeremy Mayfield. This is exit 146 on Interstate 40. 56. On Saturday mornings, visit the Cook Shack for some great jammin' and pickin'. It's the place to be in Union Grove on Saturdays. They also have concerts during the week. Contact Pal to get on the email list. 57. In downtown Mocksville, there are some great shops--Bizzy Beez. 58. There are several antique stores in Boonville, N.C. This is another town along the wine tour trail. 59. Whippoorwill Academy houses the Tom Dooley Art Museum in Wilkes County on Hwy 268. Please call before visiting (336-973-3237). 60. Welcome to the Brushy Mountain Bee Farm. They have beekeeping supplies and beekeeping equipment. (1-800-233-7929). 61. Delicious and elegant meals are paired with wines of Black Wolf Vineyard at the Wolf's lair Restaurant. Call for reservations. (336-374-2532) 62. Situated in the beautiful valleys of Wilkes County, the W. Kerr Scott Lake and Lakeside Trails are great for hiking and picnics. 63. The Wilkes Art Gallery features monthly exhibits, public receptions and talks by interesting artist. 64. On Friday nights, go to Windsor's Crossroads Community Building and listen to the good old music. 65. Come and visit during the week, bring 2 friends and we will have your own personalized craft class or cooking class. 66. Old Salem is a living history town in Winston Salem. It is about 34-40 minutes from Madelyn's in the Grove. It has four museums, restaurants and bakeries. 67. The Vineyards of Swan Creek are within a 15 minute trip from the b&b. Buck Shoals Vineyard and Raffaldini Vineyard are two of the four vineyards. 68. BaaMoo Farm is an educational farm located 5 miles from Madelyn's in the Grove. Please call 704-876-1732. 69. Historic Fort Defiance was the 18th century home built by the Revolutionary War hero, General William Lenoir and name for the frontier fort that stood nearby. 70. "Memory Lane" Museum has the largest private collection of retired NASCAR and vintage race cars on display. 704-622-FORD. 71. Pla-Moor Bowling Lanes are located near I-40 East at 505 Davie Avenue in Statesville. 72. The Serendipity Shops carry antiques, gifts, home decor, plants and gift baskets. It's located at 201 Highway 901 South. 73. Love Valley is a small western town about 15 minutes from the B&B. Horse rentals, stable rentals, trails, rodeos and general store. (Usually open only on weekends.) 74. The Hickory Crawdads is the South Atlantic League Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Call 828-322-3000 for game dates and times. 75. The Frame Gallery of Statesville services include beautiful gifts, regionally and nationally known artists and museum quality framing. 76. The Wilkes County Historical Festival is held in June of each year. 77. We are only an hour from Hillsville, Virginia and the Gigantic Flea Market held on Labor Day. 78. The Metrolina Flea Market is held the 1st and 3rd weekends of every month. They do have a Fall and Spring Extravaganza. 79, The oldest Fiddler's Convention in the nation is held every Memorial Day weekend across the street from Madelyn's in the Grove. 80. There are several entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway and most within 30 minutes of the house. 81. The East Coast's largest Auto Auction is at exit 154 on Interstate 77 south. 82. Mayo's Restorante and Lounge has a great Italian menu. It is located in the second oldest building in downtown Statesville. 83. The Lazy 5 Ranch is 180 acre animal ranch that features over 400 kinds of animals. Open year round. 84. There is a delightful restaurant in North Wilkesboro called 6th and Main. Reservations are not a bad idea. 85. Van Hoy Family Campgrounds hold music festivals in the spring, summer & fall. They also hold the American Indian POW-WOW, the Bowhunters Jamboree, The Independence Day Gospel Concert and fireworks and more & more musical festivals every year. 86. Visit the Antique Mall of the Foothills. I-77 North exit 82 west on Hwy. 67 about .3 mile on the left. 87. Enjoy the art work of Cotton Ketchie at the Landmark Gallery in Mooresville -- 800-842-8604. 88. The Children's Museum of Iredell County offers hands on exhibits for Children. 89. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is held each year on the first weekend in October in Wilkes County. 90. Oh, and don't forget that Madelyn's in the Grove hosts weddings (40 people or less), Murder Mystery Weekends and Corporate events for up to 25 during the day or 10-12 for overnight accommodations. 91. Visit the new library in Harmony. Mon.-Thurs. hours are from 11:00-7:00 and Saturday 9:00-6:00. 92. The Zebulon Vance Home will be open soon as a museum. Please call Harry Watt at 704-875-0376 for more information. Zeb Vance lived here during the War of Northern Aggression. 93. The Bates Outlet & The Lingerie Outlet are at exit 73 at I-77 and Hwy. 421. 94. Stay with Madelyn during December for 3 nights. Get your shopping done, your wrapping complete and take home a beautiful 6 foot North Carolina Christmas tree. 95. Visit Myrtle Beach Golf Store just down the road. They make custom golf clubs. 96. Stop by Eddie Hoots store in the Union Grove Power Equipment Company and purchase one of this chain sawed carved statues of bears, owls or eagles. They are beautiful. 97. Clara's Dress Shop is just down the road. They now have an antiques shop there, too. Her hours are 9-5 and she is closed Sundays and Wednesdays. 98. On Friday mornings in Wilkesboro at the Minton Pawn on Main Street, you can go to the Hometown Opera from 7-9 a.m. each Friday morning. 99. Dee's Antiques (Hwy.64 @ Greenhill Road) and I-40 @ Hwy. 601) are in Mocksville near Garden Gate Vineyard and Raylen Vineyards. 100. The last Monday night in the month meet with the Wilkes Acoustical Association at the Watson Stage on the Wilkes Community College Campus. 101. If you plan a visit in February, attend the Ground Hog Jam. Madelyn will fix a covered dish for you to take and then enjoy the music. 102. There is nine hole golf course not too far from the B&B. It is an experience. It's called Trumpet Branch Golf. 103. The New Shiloh Bakery just off Windsor Road is a deli, a bakery and they also have some gift items. This store is owned and operated by the Amish. 104. Visit Shelton Vineyard and Winery at exit 93 on I-77. Also, make a reservation at their marvelous new restaurant, Harvest Grille. Outstanding! 105. Madelyn and John have made a self-guided antique tour. It's probably best to allow 2 days for this, maybe even three. 106. Visit Meadowlark Landing in North Wilkesboro. This is a wonderful emporium with great gift items, a knitting shop and even a country restaurant. 107. Visit Tilley Harley Davidson in Statesville. They are just down the I-77 at exit 49A. 108. Come back and relax and stay another day at
